Kontrol Freek’s 'Speed Freek’ and ‘FPS Freek’ Review
By Joel Kuntz (frozenfire1) www.360-Hq.com
Supplier: www.KontrolFreek.com

The wonderful team over at Kontrol Freek, recently gave us a chance to test out their new products FPS and Speed Freek. While we’ve had a solid month to test out their products we’ve given each of them a solid 25 hours plus for each, so we know how well each of them works. I’m going to take this chance here to thank all of Kontrol Freek now for giving us this chance to review their products. Now on to the review!

To start the review we will first explain a bit of background information. If you are on the 360-Hq homepage click read more to check out the full review!

What is the Speed Freek?
The Speed Freek product is a simple controller modification that can be attached or removed quite easily. Its aim is to make steering in Racing games a lot more accurate. By using a simple physics property of leverage it allows you to move the left thumbstick (most commonly your steering) in much smaller more precise movements so you can get those corners down pat and shave seconds of your best times.

What is the FPS Freek?
The FPS Freek is again another simple controller modification that can be attached or removed without too much effort. Its main goal is to increase your aim in First Person Shooter games, or any games that require small, precise movements of the thumbsticks. Again this product uses leverage by raising the thumbstick up, so you can make smaller movements much more easily, and hopefully get better accuracy in your games, and maybe some more headshots.

How does it Stand up?
I’ve had more than a solid month with both products and let me say I can definitely notice an improvement in my racing, and FPS games. I’ve tested countless FPS games included Fallout 3, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, and Rainbow Six Vegas 2. With all the FPS games I’ve played I can say this truly does help, and although it does take some time to get used to, after that learning curve I think you will hit almost an improvement curve. It’s difficult to get used to at first because the control stick is raised up quite a bit and after years of playing xbox your hand isn’t used to that height improvement. After you get used to it though your games will most likely improve (mine did and have.) Kontrol Freek recommends you give it a chance for at least an hour to help get you used to it. However it probably only took me about twenty minutes to adjust.

The Speed Freek is a whole different beast, and really does help just as much as the FPS. I’ve tested on a few games including Forza 2, Burnout Paradise, and Project Gotham 3. And it really does help you control those turns a lot better. It’s a simple little addon that really does go a long way. I found the Speed Freek was really easy to use and get used to because it doesn’t raise the stick, just widens it. I was used to it after only one race in Forza 2, so not long at all.

Now that you know how they stack up to a regular controller, here is the decisive part of the review. I think for the low price that these are they are quite worth it. And if you are an avid racing fan (Forza 3 anyone?) or an Avid FPS fan (Modern Warfare 2!) you will want to pick these up for an easy leg up in the competition that isn’t considered cheating. They even have combo packs so if you like both genres you get the best of both worlds. If you have any questions or comments feel free to comment in our Forums, and I’ll be sure to try and answer you, Happy Fragging.

Final Score:

Build Quality: Both are solid pieces of plastic, and the FPS Freek is even sturdier than the standard 360 controller. The Speed Freek may seem a bit flimsy but for racing games I doubt they will wear out.

4.5/5

Packaging: Comes in a simple tube that minimizes waste and protects the product, even has instructions if you do get confused.

5/5

Ease of Use: As simple as clicking it onto the thumbstick, removal is easy for both products if you are changing genres or a friend is playing.

5/5

Overall: Highly recommended product, With the assortment of AAA titles coming out this fall you will want a leg up on the competition that will compliment your skills. Be sure to check this product out, you won’t regret it.

5/5

Verdict: Highly Recommended
