Among a number of new announcements debuting in Japan today, Capcom revealed that its hit Japanese online action game franchise Monster Hunter will be coming to the Xbox 360 in Japan this summer in the form Monster Hunter Freedom.
According to VG247, the publisher "can't announce" if and when the updated title will be coming to Western audiences -- this version of the franchise originally released in 2007 on PC and PlayStation 2, but has never launched outside Japan.
The grind-centric, multiplayer-friendly franchise has sold millions of copies in Japan, where it's particularly popular on the PlayStation Portable -- but has also recently debuted a Wii version, Monster Hunter Tri, which is confirmed for Western release in April.
In the meantime, consumer weblog Kotaku reports that the title's closed beta will start in May 2010 in Japan. When services begin this summer, users will pay ¥1,400 ($15) a month -- a fee that also includes a monthly Xbox Live Gold membership. This means Monster Hunter: Frontier players become Gold members for free so long as they subscribe to the MMO.
Further on the partnership between Capcom and Microsoft, iconic Gears of War characters Marcus and Dom will appear in the Xbox 360 version of upcoming Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 title Lost Planet 2, which received a May 18 release date today for the U.S. and Europe. According to reports, the company confirmed it also plans to launch Dead Rising 2 this Spring.
Also part of Capcom's official Spring 2010 line-up for the U.S. and Europe are releases for Wii title Monster Hunter Tri in April and Xbox 360/PS3 title Super Street Fighter IV, which will launch in the U.S. and Europe on April 27 and April 30, respectively.
Capcom will also release downloadable Final Fight: Double Impact via Xbox Live and PlayStation Network in April. The game is a dual re-release of classic sidescrolling action titles Final Fight and Magic Sword as part of a single package, and Final Fight heroes Cody and Guy will also appear as playable characters in Super Street Fighter IV.
If Apple can prevent another computer maker from selling unauthorized Mac OS X machines, then Microsoft should be able to stop another accessory vendor from selling unauthorized Xbox 360 plugins loaded with video-game cheats.
That's one of the arguments the Redmond company makes in a new motion to dismiss an antitrust lawsuit filed in November by Datel Design & Development, a maker of attachable memory units and game controllers for the Microsoft console.
Whether or not you buy Microsoft's contention, it's a pretty fascinating twist in a case that could ultimately determine the rules of competition in the business of video game consoles, games and accessories.
Quick background: Datel argues that Microsoft is monopolizing the market for "Multiplayer Online Dedicated Gaming Systems," and using that position to unfairly control the related market for video-game accessories -- in this case by putting up technological barriers to Datel memory units and controllers that compete with Microsoft's own Xbox 360 accessories.

“Halo” fans, make ready your battle rifles and prepare to step into an expanded fight on Xbox LIVE. Mythic 2 Map Pack, a Game Add-on developed by Bungie for “Halo 3” consisting of three multiplayer maps available previously only on the “Halo 3: ODST” multiplayer disc, is set to arrive on Xbox LIVE on Feb. 2, 2010.
The release of the Mythic 2 Map Pack brings the total number of “Halo 3” multiplayer maps to 24. The Game Add-on includes three action-packed maps: Heretic, Citadel and Longshore.
Heretic brings players to familiar ground as the “Halo 2” arena Midship returns in “Halo 3.” The stark interior of the Pious Inquisitor might appear austere on first glance, but Heretic’s symmetrical spaces require players to execute complex strategies in order to outplay their opponents.
Citadel may be a long abandoned Forerunner stronghold, but its small, symmetrical confines are far from secure. Two opposing bases offer little safety for players looking for solace. Instead, Citadel forces small squads to stay in constant communication, keep their heads on a swivel, and be prepared to adjust combat tactics in close quarters.
Longshore lacks the commercial ships that once made it a lucrative port for Old Mombasa, but it still bustles with activity. Designed for large-scale combat and well-suited for smaller affairs, Longshore’s multitude of industrial buildings, elevated walks, and open inlets conspire to create a complex battleground tailored for multiple combat scenarios.
Mythic 2 Map Pack will be available on Xbox LIVE for 800 Microsoft Points. Mythic Map Pack 1 and 2 are also included in “Halo 3: ODST,” which includes the complete “Halo 3” multiplayer map collection, an all-new campaign and the incredibly popular cooperative experience, Firefight. “Halo 3: ODST” will act as a key to the upcoming “Halo: Reach” multiplayer beta which goes live later this spring.
