Originally released in the arcades by Konami in 1985 "Yie Ar Kung Fu" (pronounced Yee-Err) is now back on the Xbox 360 with Xbox Live Leaderboard support and other basic online features.
Overview
Yie Ar Kung Fu is a 2D fighting game which will more then likely only be remembered by old school gamers and that's probably a good thing. I doubt this title will appeal to any new players.
As you control your character "Oolong" on his quest to become the ultimate champion you will come up against 11 different opponents including:
Characters:
Club
Fan
Sword
Tonfun
Blues
Buchu
Star
Nuncha
Pole
Feedle
Chain
Each of the 11 opponents you compete against have different styles and ofcourse weaponry. Luckily, not all opponents carry weapons.
Some of the weapons you will be up against include: shuriken stars, nunchucks, bo and the chain with a claw-like attachment amongst many more.
Gameplay - 4/10
The gameplay is what you would expect from such an old arcade game.. Sure I had some fun bringing back those old memories but that's just me. I really couldn't see many younger gamers shelling out the money for such a short game.
To control your fighter it's as simple as holding a button and choosing a direction on your D-PAD or Analog stick for different moves. You could also tap the button and the direction.
Controls
A (Green) - Punch
B (Red) - Kick
By moving the D-Pad or Left Analog Stick you will find an array of moves to use against your opponents.. Every opponent has their own weakspot.
Graphics - 4/10
Since "Yie Ar Kung Fu" is a port to the Xbox 360 Live Arcade from the original arcade machine the graphics are exactly the same. You have the choice to choose from HD enhanced graphics or the original using the HELP & OPTIONS menu within the game. Old school 2D Graphics will bring back the memories for some of you but most will just turn the other way.
Sound - 4/10
You have two options for sound while you play. You can choose to hear the enhanced sound effects (which is recommended) or the original.
Nothing much else to add hear apart from all original sounds are exactly as per the original. Just remember how old this game is when you check out the demo.
Overall - 4/10
As I mentioned above I wouldn't recommend this title to new xbox live arcade gamers but would ask anyone who did previous play this game on the original arcade to check it out. I am a collector of old arcade games myself and love this type of thing. I know for a fact even I struggle to play this title and I enjoyed this game when it was new.
