Soul Calibur IV
Genre: Fighting
Platform: PS3, Xbox360
Single Player / Campaign :
Oh god, someone stop me, I'm about to do a STORY analysis on a fighting game... Soul Calibur IV is just like any game in it's genre, a sad excuse for game developers to emphasize on boobs A LOT (Exhibit A). And when I say A LOT, I mean A LOT (Exhibit B). So, the storyline is almost non-apparent, and switched out with quick cut-scenes often involving women WAAY too top-heavy to stand. Yet somehow these women manage to jump around and often kick the shit out of the men in the picture. The whole storyline in this game is EXTREMELY lame in comparison to the past titles in the series, in Sould Calibur II you had to fight through dungeons to acquire the soul edge, but in this one, you beat 4 stages and HEY, YOU'RE AT THE LAST BOSS! That's right folks. This game's storyline is 5 stages long. Sure, they have a different set of 5 for every character, but the only cut-scene is at the end. On a lighter note, a lot of the cut-scenes are comical in some way, shape, or form. Whether or not the comical nature of the cut-scenes was intended I simply don't care. Never-the-less, it's funny.
Now, onto the single-player side of it. As anyone who has ever played a fighting game should know, you can basically win by smashing grab repeatedly. Meaning, this game is EXTREMELY easy. Easiness aside, it is fun to play, and I often find myself messing around in the character creation screen trying to make something cool. That's right, just like in Soul Calibur III, there's character creation. One really disappointing thing about character creation though, is that when it comes to options, it seems as if there are none. And if you make a female, good luck trying to find any clothes. Anyone who knows of Project Soul, should know that they import Characters from that console in their game, well, kind of. Each console gets console specific content. For Soul Calibur IV, the Xbox gets Yoda, and the Playstation gets Darth Vader. But good news! If you want to get you're hands on Vador, he's only one DLC away! (greedy bastards)
Multiplayer :
This games multiplayer is just the same as all other fighter games multiplayer, whoever gets the first grab wins! YAAAY! Not entirely actually. This game has a "special" fighting mode where your character's gear actually gives him bonuses (gasp!) and often helps win. The three main stats are Health, Defense, and Attack... I'm sure I don't have to delve to deep into that cesspool for you to understand how basic it is. Never-the-less it makes for some much more interesting fights, for example a guy with 200% Health, 50% Defense and 50% Attack, versus a guy with 50% Health, 50% Defense, and 200% Attack. Even then, the game can only go so long before turning into a grab fest.
Overall :
It's still an AWESOME fighting game, and if you enjoy the genre, you'll enjoy the game. If you don't enjpy the genre... what's wrong with you? I give this game a 9/10 for it's overall score. Only nine because of their lame excuse for a storyline. Give me a story dammit! To quote Porky the Pig, "Th-Th-Th-That's all folks!"
