Wonder boy in Monsterland is a side-scroller game with a little Role Playing thrown in. It comes to xbox 360-hq courtesy of the SEGA Master System, where it's still widely regarded as one of the best games ever made. The balance between jump and stab action with a role-playing storyline requiring players to upgrade your equipment (Boots, Sword, Armour & Shield) as well as collect gold from various obvious and hidden spots amongst the 12 levels makes this long loved title a worthy purchase on xbox live.
You begin the game nude (haha)unable to do anything but run & jump. Right from the first door (of which there are hundreds, some hidden) you get a sword to kick off the adventure. Running and jumping through 12 levels of Knights, Mushrooms, Kranken's, Ghosts, Fireballs, Crabs, Monkeys and a host more beating them to gather keys and gold to gain access to the next levels whilst taking gold to the scattered shops to upgrade Armour, Boots, Shield and Sword. Beating the Boss brings the end of most levels along with a bit of gold and a nice bonus if you finish with full hearts(health).
It's a crisper game than the first Wonder Boy from SEGA which was a hit in arcades back in the early 80's. In fact, Wonder Boy in Monster Land feels quite a bit different than its predecessor -- there are only a few elements left in common, like the fact that you can sometimes discover hidden invisible items by jumping up and down in secret spots in each level, and the fact that the whole ordeal is timed.
Monster Land's hourglass that slowly depletes over time ensures you can't just dawdle, or you'll be dead.
One interesting aspect to this sequel's gameplay is its hidden doors. Your hero will discover shops and things in village areas, castles and caves -- they're easy to see and enter. But the most lucrative shops and secrets are hidden behind doors that are hidden( you'll just have to figure out where to stand and press Up on the D-Pad to enter them). The game will sometimes give you clues through text boxes and question mark icons, but you'll need a good sense for treasure hunting to find them all. Or better still, knowledge of where they are from when you first played this game two decades ago.
I have a soft spot for this game as it was a favorite in the local shopping centre growing up and many hours and change were spent on trying to get revival pills, legendary boots and shaking the crap out of the joystick to maximize gold all while pissing off the local shop keeper.
Also of note my xbox live gamertag "HQ M0NSTERB0Y" is derived from this title.
I haven't really played the other titles in the pack but imagine they are fun for old school retro gamers also.
There is story/campaign mode along with some other leaderboard modes that are short and fun for those who want some competition.
