  | NBA Live 06 | |
Live 06 for the Xbox 360 is a classic reason for games not to simply receive a graphics upgrade while leaving the rest of the game in either the same or in this case worse condition than on the previous generation's console. Several features that were key to the quality of NBA Live 06 on the Xbox and Playstation 2 were omitted in order to quickly make an Xbox 360 version of this game. You only get to play one year of season mode, once that is finished you can repeat the year or just not play any more. You do not have any type of fantasy team where you draft your own players; you also miss several key components of the other parts of the game.
Gameplay is roughly on par with the past basketball games, you run, you shoot, you dunk, and you lay up, when on defense you steal, you block, and you get schooled. There was nothing changed as far as the gameplay goes from the last generation version. The graphics are where this game really shines, the animations are above average but occasionally you''ll see a hiccup and notice a not-so-smooth transition from one move to the next. You can see exact muscle definition, you can see the individual beads of sweat running down a players face and arms. The clothing freely sways just as you would expect in a real-world basketball game. It even seems that the clothing gets wet and doesn''t move as much during the later parts of a game; I may have just not paid as much attention to this detail and thought it meant it didn''t move as much though. You can also tell when a teammate is getting winded as he will start to breathe harder and won''t be able to make as many shots.
This is where the quick coaching comes into play you can easily substitute players, call plays, call for double teams and much more via the directional pad. This allows you to quickly and effectively change your gameplay while in the middle of a game, you can also use buttons on the controller to quickly pass to any player on your team, to alley-oop and more features that are now standard in basketball games.
The achievements in this game are decently easy to get, you can easily choose a good team such as the Lakers, and go through the year of season mode over and over until you get all of the season mode achievements, the other few achievements require a bit of work, but it still is very easy to accomplish. Just go into the season mode, boost your top 5 players, and take another team and drop all of their players stats so that you can easily beat them, once you do this complete a game on each difficulty, the only thing remaining is the hardest achievement of the bunch, win an online game. You can easily invite a friend to play with you and take turns with who wins, so this achievement can be pretty easy as long as you have Xbox Live Gold membership.
Graphics 8.7/10 Looks as good as you would expect a next generation game to look. Sweat rolling of a player never looked this good before.
Gameplay 7.5/10 Plays like basketball should. Features missing though. If it had a deeper season mode and the other features from the previous generation version it would score higher.
Audio 9.5/10 The audio really makes you feel like you are at a live basketball game, from the roaring crowds to the sounds on the court level everything is recreated to perfection
Replay 7.2/10 Once you beat the season, you will probably have your fill of basketball without being able to recruit new talent for your own team and the single year of basketball you are only left with exhibition games to play.
Achievements 4.3/10 These achievements are ridiculously easy to get choose a good team, beef their stats up, play season mode and you have the achievements.
Overall 7/10 It has some great points, but it was mostly audio/video related the gameplay and other features in the game were just lacking. Hopefully NBA Live 07 will make up for this.
