I'll let you know from the start, I couldn't stand graw. When I would die constantly due to teammates not covering me, and the fact they got stuck more times then not. I put the game down.
So I thought I'd give graw 2 a shot. Here’s what I thought of Graw 2.
You start off in Mexico trying to stop a rebel fraction from using nukes on the US. You find yourself, on both sides of the border. You play the game from the 3rd person perspective, but can change it to first person if you'd like. You have a team of 3, which you can change around.
I found it refreshing to only have to baby-sit 3 team mates apposed to two teams. You can move them with the overhead view or by personally selecting a spot for them. The greatest addition is the ability to put them in recon mode. They will not shoot unless it is absolutely necessary. Really nice for getting into a defensive position, before launching your attack. Your team does a decent job of seeking out cover, and killing enemies. I only had them get hung up a few times. Which was very nice. What I found they were good at though, was their announcement of enemy positions. For example, he’s next to the 3 pipes, or by the red car. Makes it nice, to actually pay attention to what they say.
Support units are pretty helpful; they range from your trusty uav, to air strikes. The only one I didn't really find very useful aside from giving me ammo, was the mule. I could have lived without this support vehicle. You can control support vehicles and designate targets. I found it kind of pathetic the amount of shots required for them to take a target out. I was on a M1A1 tank in Iraq, and using the main round on troops is a bit of over kill. I could have done without that. Also the inability to set them on weapons free was annoying to say the least. I can understand you don't want a support vehicle stealing your thunder, but when they are getting fired at they won’t return fire. Instead they will let you know they are getting shot, and you have to seek cover and take over for them. But they definitely make your job easier.
The graphics were stunning, I found myself looking out the door of the blackhawk more then paying attention to what I was being dropped off for. It’s visually stunning to look over a city and see so much detail. The explosions are pretty breath taking also, from the bright flash, to the smoke reacting with the wind. Its really realistic, brought back memories from Iraq on more then one occasion for me.
The enemy AI was pretty lacking, they do a decent job of seeking cover, and running from grenades. But other then that they are pretty easy to dispose of. I played the game threw on the easy setting to get used to the controls, and thought it was just because of the setting. But I played it on the hardest setting, and found them to have the same flaws. They are easily flanked, and will let you do it time and time again.
The sound effects in this game are over the top. If you have a 5.1 setup it’s really engrossing. From the explosions to the wiz of bullets, Ubi really captured the feel of war with this one. Unlike other game soundtracks the music really blended well and gave the game a very nice feel. For me it’s hard to choose my favorite aspect of the game, either visual, or audio. In either cause I love them both.
The single player game is really fast. I heard that it was short so took my time, but was still able to knock it out in less than 9 hours. I think it was pushed out a little to fast, I love the attention to detail that Ubi took on this, but they just rushed it out to soon to do the single player justice.
But the multiplayer is incredible, there are so many modes, and options to tweak that it offers something to every type of player. It's the saving grace of the game. For without it I wouldn't feel it was worth the 59.99 price tag. I feel that the multiplayer aspect of the game is deserving of its own review. It’s just that vast.
Pro:
gorgeous visual and audio effects
Mulitplayer
Cons:
To short
Enemy AI
Support vehicle inability to go weapons free
