  | Far Cry: Not the best, not the worst | |
Overview
Well, this is one of the first games that I owned on the Xbox 360. The reason I got it was because FarCry Instincts was the last game that I had for the regular Xbox. I was still in the middle of that game when the 360 came out and I was unable to finish the game, so I grabbed it up for the 360 early on, and that’s on top of me being a FPS fan on the other hand. Blah, blah, anyways…
This game actually has two games in 1. The two games packed in is the original FarCry instincts and then FarCry Instincts Predator, which is the sequal. First off I want to mention that the second game (Predator) is more like a large expansion, opposed to an entire game. Its just not near as long as the first one. It’s a Sci-Fi shooter that starts out somewhat normal. You are driving a small transport boat for a living and you end up on a tropical island with a band of mercenaries. Doesn’t sound to bad, does it? You end up becoming a part of an experiment and you begin to grow animal-like (feral) capabilities or powers. Things like jumping, running fast, knocking people across the screen, etc. All these abilities are pretty much just exaggerated. As you would expect, these abilities are critical to master and use to get you through the game. Eventually you work toward the end where you get to the bottom of the science experiment.
Controls
The control scheme is easy to master. It will take approx 5-10 minutes max, FPS vets will have it mastered sooner than that. It uses a common setup for FPS games.
Weapons
One of the positives of this game are the many weapons that are in this game. There are a lot raning from pistols to sniper rifles to rocket launchers and everything in between. You even get to use a blow gun…Ninja style. You can dual up the smaller weapons (smg’s pistols) aka Halo 2 style. But overall, there is a nice selection of weapons that offer a lot of options and play styles.

Vehicles
This is another very nice quality to this game…the vehicles. There are many vehicles in this game and you can get in and drive every last one of them….ALL BUT THE HELICOPTER! That’s a big bummer too. It would have been so cool to use the helicopter in an Ariel view of the Tropical Island. Vehicles range from ATV’s, boats (many different styles), hovercrafts, and even a hand glider. That is just a handful of them that are useable in this game. As for the weapons, the vehicle aspect of this game is a fun experience in this game.
Graphics
A good way to describe the graphics in this game is by saying this is a nice looking game with nice tropical visuals, but wouldn’t classify as a true next-gen game. The only aspect of this game that looks next-gen as far as the graphics is the water. They water effect looks really nice, and considering a lot of the game takes place on the ocean in a tropical environment…that’s a good thing. I wouldn’t consider this a game that has very stunning graphics though. Its no Gears of War or GRAW.
Multiplayer
The actual game play of the multiplayer isn’t all steller, but its everything else that makes it pretty good. First off, it comes with a map editor. That’s major to me, and that might just be me, but I wish every multiplayer-shooter game would come with a map creator / editor. This way everyone can put their own spin on multiplayer matches. This game also offers a few different multiplayer game types. Most are the normal (CTF, Deathmatch, etc…), but there is on mode that is called Predator. This is a pretty interesting multiplayer mode, but very fun. Basically one team is the mercenaries and the other is the Predator, and the Predator has all the feral abilities that you gain when completing the story mode. Its pretty nice. You can use every single vehicle in the multiplayer that you see in the single player as well, which is really pretty cool, because there is a large range of vehicles in this game. With the large number of packed in maps from the developers, map creator / editor, gametypes, vehicles and weapons, this game is a pretty fun multiplayer experience. It wont knock your socks off, but its worth playing.
With all said and done, I would recommend picking up this game if you like FPS games, or if you are looking for getting your moneys worth. You could find this game used now for under $30 and that’s a major plus as well. You get two games for the price of one with a map creator / editor and that’s the main reason id recommend this game.
