"Dragonball z: Burst limit" being a dragonball z fan boy and having played from budokai through to budokai tenkaichi 2, i have to say i was looking forward to this game, based on the popular anime series and with the designer dimps on board the game goes back to its budokai routes, how does this far up to the other games and is it any good as a stand alone game? being the first of the series to go next gen i hope it is!
Overview
Right, for new comers that don't know the difference between budokai and budokai tenkaichi ill explain. Budokai was more of a close combat almost street fighter game and shares similarites to the psp versions of the game. Budokai Tenkaichi goes the step further and incorporates flight which is a big part of dragonball z, distance battles, and a lot of movement around the environments. For those who dont even know what a dragon ball is, the anime is about goku who is a saiyen (think warrior who can transform into a giant monkey in the full moon from a distant planet sent to destroy the earth), who having lost his tail as a kid, and getting a bonk on the head, cannot transform into the super destructive giant monkey, but as an adult discovers he is a super saiyen and can power up changing his hair from black to yellow, and has a whole host of super baddies to take out. I could go on and on of the intricacies of the story line, but this will suffice for now. The game focus on one on one fights from the anime starting from the saiyen saga through to the cell saga. This is quite disappointing as DBZ: BT2 went from the saiyen saga to the Kid buu saga and incorporated loads of characters and alternate story lines, what ifs and so on. The Game is very cut down when compared to the other games and it might be hard for someone not familiar to the series to not know whats going on, it does have a couple of clip movies which help fill in the gaps which are very cool and very enjoyable blurring the line between game and anime.
Gameplay - 8/10
The gameplay is quite simple but the controls are complex and i've always loved the series of games due to the complexities of counters, dodges and teleports. A is guard, X and Y serve as attack, B is your Ki attack (think basic energy ball) a combination of B and a direction are your specials, RB is your transform button for going super saiyen, LB is aura burst which activates a glow around you which gives you various bonus for a while. The combat can be a bit repetitive but you get to play as many different characters and the varying difficulty does make it a good challenge. The story mode is short and sweet, and there are a few additional modes to squeeze some variety in there. Every DBZ game ive played has a gimmick and this ones gimmick is drama scenes. At first i thought it annoying that every now and then there's a break in gameplay for a character to say something but then i realized that was what the anime was all about. A bit of combat, a break for the characters to taunt each other, more combat, another scene etc, very cool indeed.
Graphics - 10/10
I was completely blown away by the graphics, The animation is beautiful, with the characters moving smoothly, the energy blasts look very cool i was left feeling that the whole anime could be done in this cell shading and it would be as good as the original if not better!
Sound - 6/10
Ka...me...ka...me....ka....ma...ha...me...ha.... yeah i've heard it a thousand times now and i am getting bored of it. It sounds like a dragon ballz game. It does.
Overall - 7/10
Being a fanboy i thought it was awesome, let done by the characters available, don't know why they stepped back to the budokai series, could have had more story line, at least it means there's definately (hopefully) going to be a burst limit 2, and i'm sure this is just the start of a new batch of games, but i hope they don't drag it out too much. A great game, but it only deserves a 7 as there is so much left out from previous games, there's nothing new, and the story line is inconsistent.
