Civilization Revolution Review

Genre: TBS

Quick Note
This review will be somewhat of a mixed one, as I love the game, but at the same time, it has little things that peeve me. Anyway, here we go!

Summary
For those of you who don't know, TBS stands for Turn Based Strategy. That's right, we're talking Age of Empires, one turn at a time here folks! In this game you are given a multitude of leaders to choose from, each having it's own set of benefits. The leaders each represent a civilization, some that are long gone, and some that are still here today. For example, you could have the Romans and the Americans duking it out from 4000B.C. to 2100A.D. That's right again folks! You get to play for over 6000 years! Now, each turn does go up by a specified amount of years. When you start it goes up by 100 years each turn, and gradually slows down to a sluggish pace of 2 years per turn in the 2000s. The game let's you build up from caveman style battles to epic dogfights with bombers and fighters whizzing through the air!

The vast amount of different battles that could be had is an amazing thing to fathom, but nonetheless awesome. The game even has a built in leveling system! For every 3 battles a unit wins, you get to choose an upgrade, and you can combine 3 units to make an army. The game even gives specialized units unique and slightly comical names! Like The Ninja Warrior Army, The Warrior Army of Thunder, or The Ninja Warrior Army of Thunder! You can't lose with a Ninja Warrior Army of Thunder! And even then you can add a mini-leader to a group, giving them even MORE powers! The games battle are mostly based of stats though, each unit is given an attack and a defense, if your unit has more defense then the attacker, you'll most likely win, and vice versa. This doesn't take away from the awesomeness of watching two units duke it out though! You haven't seen anything until you've seen a group of pikemen take down some fighter planes. The Game is all set atop a massive square grid that is shaped like a globe, and you run around building cities, researching technology, and discovering artifacts, hoping that you will emerge victorious over all others! You can win in 4 different ways,: Technologically, by getting to space first, Economically, by buying everything, Culturally, make everyone switch to your belief system, or Dominantly, dominate the world! The game is so fun and cartoon you'll find yourself laughing for hours as you mindlessly plug away into developing a civilization. This isn't to say the game doesn't have its fair share of downfalls. Some gameplay issues that don't make sense, like how Gandhi always ends up being a murderous bastard, or how pikemen can actually kill fighter jets. (I HAVE done this) The game seems to taunt you somehow, by saying, "Yea, you can totally kill that guy with a defense of 1, since you unit has an attack of 124!" You attack, "Haha! Sucks to be you I lied!" And on top of that the game gets really glitchy in online play, it's hard to go 4 minutes in an online match without wondering... how the HELL did that just happen?! But that almost adds to the over all fun-ness of the game. Since it's all cartoony when these things happen you end up laughing for hours, because you just wonder, WHY!? And all of the characters that pop up to guide you through the game decide that they're going to talk in Sims language, meaning, YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND A WORD THEY'RE SAYING. It's a wonder that they even decided to get voice actors for this game, as the nearest you get to an actual sentence is "Ownumbro". (sound it out, you'll get it)

Multiplayer
I don't know how I'm going to get by this section without mentioning a personal story, so I'll just get it out of the way:

Once while I was playing this online with a friend, I started out rocky and he kinda helped me along, ensuring my survival through the beginning of the game. That may not sound all that interesting, BUT, he ended up getting stuck fighting Gandhi (I know, right?) for two thirds of the game, while I was on a vast deserted chunk of land, with mountains separating me from the rest of the world. While he was struggling the whole game, I sat back and florished, and by the time he asked for help, I replied, "sure" and flew a few bomber wings his way. Well... he was still in the stages of melee combat, so needless to say, many laughs were had about the flabergastednes s he showed.

Now that THAT is out of the way I can get on with the reviewin'. But that story does bring up a good point, tides can change so fast in the game online, it's almost safe to say you'll never know what the hell is really going on on the other side of the world. The online gameplay of this game is so zany and unbalanced its laughable, everyone picks 'the good civilizations' and the other ones are left flailing in the wind like some unwanted puppy. (now that made no sense) The games lags TERRIBLY online, frame rates drop below 10 at times, and games crash for no apparent reason other then they can.

Graphics
I can't really rate the graphics on a game like this without giving it a poor score... I'm sorry, but even though it's an amazing game and it's graphics are terrible, they fit. Therefore the graphics get a 7/10.

Overall Rating
I can't recommend this game any higher to anyone who enjoys a good bit of strategy. This game really delivers on what it's intended for, and on that note, I give it a 9/10. You may ask: "Why one point off?", mainly because of the lag that one must endure in the later stages of the game.
